In the Upper Venosta Valley, you can enjoy culture that is second to none! Discover the famous Carolingian frescoes in St. Benedict’s, Marienberg Abbey, the Fürstenburg Castle, the nearby medieval town of Glorenza, the Vinschger Museum and the Castel Coira in Sluderno, with its famous armory.
Castel Coira will appeal to your whole family. If you take the Venosta Valley train to Sluderno, even your ride to the castle will be a great adventure.
If you prefer to enjoy culture right outside your front door, we would suggest taking a short walk to St.Nicholas’ Chapel or to Benedictine Marienberg Abbey above Burgusio, with its Baroque church, crypt and well-preserved 12th-century frescoes.
Also worth a visit and of great historical interest are the Church Tower in Lake Resia and the smallest town of South Tyrol, Glorenza, with its fully preserved medieval town walls.
A litter further away, proudly enthroned above the entrance to the Schnalstal Valley, is Juval Castle. It is now the home of the famous mountaineer Reinhold Messner. Part of the castle is open to the public and shows an exhibition of masks which Messner collected on his world-wide travels.
A little further south, the spa town of Merano with its Mediterranean flair awaits you. Here a visit to the botanical gardens of Trauttmansdorff Castle is a definite must for every botany lover. In winter, the city delights visitors with one of the most beautiful Christmas markets in the Alpine region and the famous Terme of Merano is a true oasis of well-being all year round.
